Geoff Cameron says it was great to score his first goal for Queens Park Rangers in the 1-1 draw at home to Derby County in the Sky Bet Championship.
The 33-year-old, who is on a season-long loan with the Rs from divisional rivals Stoke City, scored in the 48th minute at Loftus Road to cancel out Jack Marriott’s first-half opener for the Rams.
It was an accomplished finish from the USA international as he fired past Scott Carson and Cameron revealed his delight at getting off the mark for the west Londoners.
“I was trying to follow the ball. Nahki Wells turned around and I looked up, saw where the goalie was and tried to keep it low,” Cameron told the club website.
“I’ve seen some guys put it over from that position, so I just wanted to get it on target. I was happy that it went in and brought us back into the game.
“We created some more chances after that and were disappointed not to take them, but I was happy to get my first goal for the club. The crowd were loud and it was a great feeling to score.”
As for the match itself, QPR followed up a victory at Reading in midweek with a point against Derby.
And Cameron revealed he thought the game was an end-to-end match that would have excited those in the stands.
“It was an entertaining game. It was back-and-forth and both teams created chances,” he added.
“We’re disappointed we didn’t get the three points, but we had some opportunities.
“We’re disappointed we didn’t put them away, but I was happy to get my first goal for the club and get a point.
“We just have to keep climbing the table and it’s another positive for us.”
Cameron also had praise for QPR’s effort and application against Derby after their midweek success at Reading.
“Everybody was throwing their bodies on the line and it was tough because it was a quick turnaround from the Reading game with only a couple of days to recover,” he said.
“The guys put the work in, the staff and everybody was trying to prepare themselves for another game and we were happy to get a point against Derby.
“I think we deserved more than that, but I’m happy we didn’t lose.”
Cameron will hope his next goal comes in a winning cause.
