New QPR winger Matt Phillips wants to help Charlie Austin get into his scoring stride after the striker finally grabbed his first Championship goal for Rangers on Saturday.

Austin scored the only goal of the game early in the second half at Loftus Road to give his side their fourth consecutive 1-0 league win and continue their unbeaten start.

And Phillips, who made his debut when he came on for the injured Junior Hoilett, believes he can play a big part in helping Austin emulate the form he showed for Burnley last season.

“Charlie’s game is goals, it has been for the last few years,” said Phillips. “For him it’s massive and hopefully we can get him some more. My game is about assists and goals, so if they are getting goals and I am supplying them then I’m happy.”

Phillips’ appearance was an unexpected one, with the former Blackpool man still lacking match fitness having recovered from a broken arm sustained last season, and he admitted he is still some way from top condition.

“I’m glad to have got on today – it was tough, being my first game, but I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” Phillips added. “Towards the end I was a bit out on my feet, but I enjoyed it and hopefully I’ll get some more games.

“[My arm] is ok, throughout the week I’ve been joining in training and got knocks on it, and it’s fine. It might take a couple of games, but hopefully I’ll be able to come back quickly.”

And Phillips was satisfied with another QPR win – and another clean sheet. He added: “No game is going to come easy. At times you have to dig without playing as well as you can. We got the three points and that’s the main thing.”
