Second-half goals from Massimo Luongo, Joel Lynch and Nahki Wells saw Rs come from behind to beat west London rivals

Steve McClaren was grateful to a drastic improvement in the final third from Queens Park Rangers in the second half of a 3-2 victory at home to west London rivals Brentford in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Rs trailed at the break to a Neal Maupay header, having rarely threatened to score themselves.

However, Massimo Luongo, Joel Lynch and Nahki Wells all netted inside the opening 15 minutes of the second half as the Loftus Road club turned the game on its head.

Though Henrik Dalsgaard pulled one back for the Bees late on, QPR held on to triumph and boss McClaren felt the success was down to their second-half improvements.

“I thought we were excellent in the first half. I told the players not to worry about the goal, but be better in the final third,” said the former England manager.

“We were hopeless in the final third in the first half, be it the final ball, the final shot, the cross, the decision.

“We got it right in the second half and for 20 minutes, we played great football.

“The place was rocking after that and I said we’d have to win not just on the field, but off it and the fans certainly helped us with that.”

With five goals to enjoy at Loftus Road, it certainly was a terrific derby fixture involving the two west London rivals.

McClaren acknowledged the match itself was a great advert for the game, and was delighted it was his side who came out on top.

And the 57-year-old was also happy to see his Rs turn in a display he felt would have got plenty of fans off their seats.

“I thought it was a terrific game of football. We always talk about giving a performance so that we enjoy it and the fans enjoy it,” he added.

“They certainly did that on Saturday and Brentford contributed to that.

“Brentford were excellent, so it was two very good teams with different styles and a great game of football which we were fortunate to win.

“We showed great character after being 1-0 down at half-time to be 3-1 up, blowing them away for 20 minutes.

“Brentford came back and we had to hold on, but we did that and it’s a good win.”

It certainly was a good win for QPR, no doubt made all the sweeter by the result coming against a fierce rival.
