Sky Bet Championship: Queens Park Rangers 2 (Luongo 30, Eze 32) Milwall 0

Queens Park Rangers secured bragging rights over their London rivals Millwall with a 2-0 home victory in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Rs were comfortable in the opening half, with goals from Massimo Luongo and Ebere Eze handing them a deserved lead at the interval.

From there, it was a case of game management and though the Lions offered more in attack in the second period, the Loftus Road club remained well in control.

Home boss Steve McClaren made just one change for the visit of their London rivals with Geoff Cameron coming in for Tomer Hemed, who dropped to the bench.

QPR saw plenty of the ball in the opening quarter of an hour, but were unable to create a opening to truly test Lions stopper Ben Amos.

That changed in the 28th minute when a superb ball over the top of the Millwall defence by Nahki Wells found Jordan Cousins in the area.

The midfielder, though, was forced into shooting from a tight angle and his eventual effort was blocked behind for a corner by Amos.

From the resulting set-piece, Luke Freeman played the ball along the ground to Wells in the box some 15 yards out.

The Bermuda international’s effort took a deflection which sent it looping towards goal and Luongo was able to beat Amos to the ball to head home the opener.

McClaren’s men were able to press home their dominance of possession by doubling their lead in the 32nd minute.

A cross from the left by full-back Jake Bidwell found Eze in the box, and the young forward fired in from 12 yards against a club whose academy he previously spent time in.

That was how things stayed until the break, with the Rs taking their two-goal cushion into half-time.

The Lions, though, began the second half brightly, with a powerful close-range half volley from substitute Steve Morison stinging Joe Lumley’s palms in the 51st minute.

A minute later, Millwall went closer still with Shaun Williams powerfully heading a corner against the bar, before Lumley gratefully gathered.

That seemed to wake the west Londoners up, with Wells and Bidwell testing Amos in quick succession 11 minutes into the second half.

Luongo went close to a second after being expertly played in by Eze in the 78th minute, but was denied by Amos.

The ball rebounded into the path of Cousins some 12 yards out, but his shot was also blocked before Millwall cleared their lines.

With seven minutes remaining, QPR replacement Hemed tested Amos with a free-kick from 25 yards after Eze was fouled, but the Lions stopped turned the effort behind for a corner that came to nothing.

That proved to be the last real goalmouth action of the game for the hosts, but crucially they saw the remainder out without conceding.

McClaren will hope his side can record a third straight win in the league on Saturday when they play host to Norwich City.
