Residents are battling to save The Queensbury Pub in Walm Lane, Willesden

Residents fighting to save a pub in Willesden from demolition have slammed a lack of councillor action and claimed their silence ignores popular opinion.

More than 3,500 residents have signed a petition against plans from developers Fairvew Homes, which could see the Queensbury Pub, in Walm Lane, knocked down and replaced by a 10-storey block of flats.

The application is due to be considered by the council’s planning committee but residents are angry at what they see as a lack of action.

According to a report compiled by campaigners, just three councillors out of 12 across four affected wards have formally declared an objection, while some have failed to respond to emails.

This is despite the petition and more than 300 objections from residents.

Sujata Aurora, a member of the Save the Queensbury campaign, said residents had been calling for action for months.

Cllrs Aslam Choudry and Krupesh Hirani, Labour councillors for Dudden Hill ward, which borders Walm Lane, are among those to have not officially offered their support.

Cllr David Clues, the ward’s Liberal Democrat councillor, has been living in Brighton since December 2011 and has not offered an opinion. Willesden Green’s Liberal Democrat councillors, Ann Hunter and Gavin Sneddon, have so far not aired a view while the ward’s other councillor, Lesley Jones, has objected.

Ms Aurora said: “We are disappointed that so many of them are out of step with public opinion and appear to back the demolition of a valued community resource by profit-hungry developers.”

Ms Aurora added: “To those councillors who are yet to declare a view we say; its not too late, the planning process is ongoing, you still have a chance to stand up for your residents and your support will be very welcome.”

Cllr Choudry, claimed he is concerned about the need for housing, while Cllr Hirani has submitted an objection based on the lack of wheelchair accessible housing.

Cllrs Mark Cummins, Sami Hashmi and Barry Cheese are all members of the planning committee which will decide the issue and are not allowed to give an opinion.
