Pupils and staff at a primary school in Wembley dressed up in their favourite characters to celebrate Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday this week.
Young Willy Wonkas, witches and tortoises, and even a Giant Peach spent today at Chalkhill Primary School in Barnhill Road honouring the iconic author whose anniversary was on Wednesday.
Bethan Mentore, the school’s literacy co-ordinator, said: “The children came in dressed up in character as they’ve been studying Roald Dahl all week with each class reading a different book. The year two’s all came dressed as Esio Trot and the year one’s as the Enormous Crocodile. Many children came dressed up as their favourite. I’m pregnant so I came dressed as Violent Beauregarde. Another teacher came in as James’ Giant Peach.”
Pupils started the day with a special assembly and throughout the day enjoyed Dahl type activities in the library.
Martin Francis, the school governor, snuck in dressed as the Fantastic Mr Fox looking for the school’s poultry. He said: “I sat in on some of the classes where they were reading extracts from the books. The school keeps chickens much loved by Mr Fox so I asked them: ‘where do you keep your chickens’ and they all told me. They couldn’t lie!”
