Kensal Green councillors have stepped in to help out campaigners on a ‘poo patrol’ as dog mess is blighting a small park, so owners better watch out.

Councillors Matt Kelcher, Claudia Hector and Jumbo Chan joined Kensal Green Streets (KGS) campaigners to undertake a morning “poo policing” at Furness Pocket Park where offending owners will now be issued with £75 on the spot fines.

The group localised 35 dog faeces within five minutes of arriving but the flags and bags they came armed with ran out before they were finished.

The flags were left for 24 hours as a reminder to dog owners and passers-by just how big the problem is.

Nathalie Monnot, of KGS, said: “The KGS committee is very concerned that the Furness Pocket Park is being used as a “dog toilet” and hopes that this action will bring the issue to the attention of dog owners. It is an offence not to clean up after your dog has fouled and it is the responsibility of dog owners to clean up after their dog.

“Brent Council has improved the Furness Pocket Park following the suggestions made by local residents of Kensal Green Streets and we would like the park to be fit for use by all local residents.”

Cllr Kelcher said since the visit last week he’d received a commitment from the council that there will be extra visits to the site from officers and street patrollers who will give out fines to anyone not picking up.

He said the small paper signs could be replaced with larger metal signs as a deterrent and also the possibility of naming and shaming dog owners on a nearby public notice board.

He said: “Furness Road Pocket Park is a special place for everyone in Kensal Green. The local community helped to design it, and today they still help to maintain it. This is why it’s a particular shame that the selfish actions of a few individuals are ruining this precious public space for everyone else.

“As the local Kensal Green council team we are on the side of the vast majority of law-abiding citizens who want a pocket park which is clean, accessible and safe to use.

“That’s why we’re working hard to solve these problems.”
