Brent Council sacks 11 workers following fraud investigation

Several Brent Council employees have been fired after an internal probe unearthed a host of fraudulent activities.
A total of 11 workers were sacked following an investigation which brought to light a series of serious breaches of financial regulations and the staff code of contact.
The culprits were dismissed for cheating the system by engaging in dishonest practices including working while claiming benefit; working whilst off sick and false overtime claims.
In total, town hall bosses looked into 29 cases into fraud in 2013/14 -15 of which were identified as fraudulent or irregular.
A Brent employee handed in their resignation following scandal, another received a warning.
Council chiefs decided to no action against one case despite identifying a breach of contract.
A council spokesperson said: “Brent expects its employees to act with high standards of conduct, honesty and integrity. When these expectations are not met then action is taken accordingly.
“Whenever staff misconduct incidents do occur, the council is open and transparent at all times about our investigations and subsequent actions, within the confines of the duties of confidentiality and the data protection act.
“It should be noted that the vast majority of Brent staff uphold the council’s values.
“Where possible the council will seek recovery of any losses.”
