The leader of Brent Conservatives has said he will not allow Labour to "hide" behind their majority at the local elections and will be holding them to account.

Cllr Suresh Kansagra, one of the three Tory councillors in the Kenton ward who all kept their seats, told the Times he will be keeping a watchful eye over the council.

He said: “Our concerns are still the concerns of the people which we outlined in our manifesto.

“Library closures are still a major issue and we will endeavour to support the campaigners and reopen the libraries with community support.

“We will also see that the state of footpaths and potholes in our roads, which Labour has neglected over the last four years, are tackled urgently.

He continued: “We have worked with the Labour Group in opposition in the past and have got things done and we hope that this will continue until we regain control in 2018.”

The Conservatives retained the six seats in the borough they had won in 2010, albeit with a slight shuffle.

While Kenton was unchanged, the Tories lost a seat each in Northwick Park and Preston – but gained two seats in Brondesbury Park.

New councillors Joel Davidson and John Warren were voted in and will join Carol Shaw.

The former nurse defected to the Lib Dems from the Conservatives in 2003 but returned in June 2013.

Labour gained 16 seats and the Lib Dems lost 15 out of the 16 seats they held leaving them with just one.
