When two officers on patrol were flagged down in a Harlesden street they had no idea they were about to bring a baby into the world.

PC Paul Howarth and PC Anna Drake ended up become makeshift midwives by helping Ruth Aboagyewaa give birth in the back of husband’s car in Manor Park Road.

The pair were stopped by Joshua Ankamah who asked them to take her to hospital in their police vehicle last Tuesday at 1am.

However, the officers realised the mum-to-be was in the final stages of labour as the baby’s head was crowning so they were forced to assist in the deliver Ankamah Joshua Junior themselves.

Mother and child were taken by ambulance to hospital following the safe delivery.

PC Drake added: “This was the last thing on our mind when we were pulled over.

PC Haworth, who is a father-of-three realised we were never making the hospital and baby was coming now.

“I’m just glad we where there to assist and relieved everything went so smoothly.”

PC Haworth added: “The best thing about being a police officer is you don’t know what is around the next corner, my colleague PC Drake was immense last night, cool and calm under pressure in the best traditions of the Metropolitan Police.”
