A troublesome crossing is set for a makeover following pressure from distressed pedestrians and the Fordwych Residents’ Association.

Brent Council said it will be making improvements to the crossing in Shoot-Up Hill, Kilburn, after people raised concerns over its safety.

The crossing was installed in 2016 following a campaign by pedestrians who needed quicker and safer access to bus stops on either side of the busy road.

The crossing, which is by St Cuthberts Road, is due to get LED advance warning signs to alert approaching motorists. There will also be new road markings and the surrounding street lighting is set to be improved.

The council added that it is looking at moving the nearby advertising boards and bus stops to improve visibility.

Brent councillor Ahmad Shahzad said: “All we want is the safety of residents. If there are any concerns I will work hard to put it right. Safety is number one for us. I’m sure we will put our heads together and make it safe.”

Those living close to the crossing, including members of the Fordwych Residents’ Association, have consistently urged the council to improve safety at the site.

A spokesman from the council’s Transport and Highways team said: “We are confident that these new measures will go a long way in improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians using the crossing in the area, as well as helping drivers use the road carefully and sensibly.”

Joanne Scott, co-chair of the Residents’ Association, said: “The engineers sent us an update recently on what improvements are planned, so we hope to hear about the timescale shortly.

“The overgrown tree canopies have already been trimmed around the zebra crossing, and this action has improved daylight.”

Cyclists and pedestrians have posted messages to Twitter pointing out that cars drive too quickly and don’t have time to stop at the crossing. “This zebra crossing always gets ignored. The A5 at this point is very wide and fast. Surely it needs an island with traffic calming,” tweeted NW6Cyclist. “Horrendous crossing on Shoot Up - almost impossible to see if anyone is waiting to cross… Please do something before someone dies,” tweeted Daniel Walker.
