Park in Kingsbury recognised by Green Flag Award scheme

Roe Green Walled Garden in Kingsbury, was recognised by the national scheme for the benefits it has had both on the site itself and the wider community.

Having already won gold in The Green Flag Awards, the garden became one of only 15 special innovation winners from the 1,186 applicants in 2016.

The stumpery project, creating a garden feature similar to a rockery but made of dead tree parts, was undertaken by members of the Barn Hill Conservation Group along with a group of 16-18 year olds from the Headstart Programme.

Having dug out the stumps, planting the ferns and added a Runes lphabet display, the new garden offers a habitat for a variety of wildlife, especially insects.

After being given the Green Flag Award, judges visited the garden, with Award Scheme manager Paul Todd saying: “Congratulations to everyone involved in Roe Green Walled Garden, a worthy winner of the Special Innovation Award.

“Research has proved that quality parks and green spacesplay a vital role within their local communities.

“Roe Green Walled Garden is a perfect example of this.”

The Special Awards for Innovation are presented to parks and green spaces that can demonstrate thay have made changes which have brought outstanding benefits to the site and local community.

They are also deemed to be inspirational in their committment to local improvement.

Innovation is classed as something new to the site which must have been introduced in the last three years.

It does not necessarily hinge on large financial investment, rather it must simply bring improvement to the community’s experience of the site.
