The wait is finally over for thousands of nervous teenagers in Brent pick up their A-level results today.

The fight to secure places at universities will be even tougher this year after UCAS reported a four per cent increase in applications compared with last year.

This year has also seen a record 35 per cent of English 18-year-olds apply to university and college.

The Times will keep anxious school-leavers and proud parents up-to-date with results statistics, analysis and reaction on our liveblog.

11.10am - JFS student Ephraim Levinson, 18, is off to Cambridge University to study English Literature after achieving three A*s in Eng Literature, Politics and History.

He told the Times: “The night before was especially nerve-racking. I was relived when I checked UCAS this morning. I am proud of myself but we have to recognise the hard work of the teachers and my family. I am very grateful to then.”

His proud father Ralph said: “I was relieved for him. There is always going to be an element of uncertainty.

“It is a great achievement and I am extremely proud of the achievement he has worked hard for.”

11.13am - A second JFS student is also off to Cambridge University to study English Literature.

Jonathan Shamir, 18, has gained a place after achieving three A*s in English Literature, History and Religious Studies.

He said “I am very happy with my results, I am especially happy knowing my friend and I are going to the same uni, studying the same course.

“It is comforting to have a familiar face around.”

12.35pm - ARK’s Burlington Danes Academy broke its own record today by all its students passing their A-levels.

The secondary school in White City, which is attended by students leaving in Brent, achieved 100 per cent of grades from A* - E.

Students have gained places at top universities including Cambridge, Manchester, Southampton and the London School of Economics.

Adukunle Awodele got an A* in Art & Design, a B in maths, and a B in Religious Education and is hoping to study Architecture at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Gianina Graham is the first in her family to go to university and is planning to study History at Warwick after achieving As in English Literature, History and Media studies.

She said: “It’s a huge deal to go to university. It is achievable and I’m really happy about it. My ambition is to be a journalist or news broadcaster.”

Another delighted student is Zwan Mahmod who secured As in History, Geography and Politics and is going to the London School of Economics to study History.

Dame Sally Coates, Principal at Burlington Danes Academy, said: “This is another fantastic set of results for the school. Hard work has paid off for these students and many are going off to the country’s best universities.

I am really excited to see what they achieve and wish them every success in the future.”

He gained an A* Philosophy and Ethics, B in History, and D in Geography.

4.30 pm - Dr Richard Marshall, headteacher of Copland Community School, in Cecil Avenue, Wembley, announces 70 per cent of students achieved three or more good A-level grades.

Students who achieved exceptional results were Adriana-Angela Bondor, Kadar Jama, Hafsa Mbarak, Viren Hurani Charbel Al-Rachid, Sanaulah Amanzada, Odirachukwumma Ajebe, Priya Patel, Aneesa Qadir and Bavin Patel who all achieved 3 or more A*- B grades.
