Tributes have been pouring in for a care worker who dedicated her life to those less fortunate.

Miriam Green, from Kilburn, who has died age 66, spent over 30 years working as a social care worker for Brent Council's former social services department, first in children's services, before moving on to work with older people.

She went on to became a senior practitioner at a children's home in Willesden before taking early retirement in the early 1990s.

But she dedicated much of her spare time working with people with disabilities and those with housing problems.

Miriam also founded the South Kilburn Toy Library based in the Carlton Centre, and arranged summer holidays for the South Kilburn play scheme.

She also helped arranged for children from low-income families to go to a summer holiday camp or stay with a family outside London for a week.

Martin Cheeseman, Brent Council's director of housing and community care, said: "Miriam always distinguished herself as a servant of the community in Brent. She was active well into her retirement in helping to improve the health, wellbeing, and life chances of many people from across the borough. She was well-respected by many people in the department as a great professional and will be missed by many staff."

Her daughters Pauline and Sandra Green said: "We are honoured to have had such a wonderful, caring, humanitarian mother whose purpose in life was to provide a better service for the young, old and disabled people in Brent. She will be tremendously missed. Her energy, drive and passion are acknowledged by all who met her including ourselves. We are all comforted to find out how much she meant to others, this will give us the strength, courage and support that we need."

Miriam came to Britain in 1962, and married her late husband Noel in 1965. She is survived by her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held on September 6 at the Kilburn Christian Fellowship Church in Aldershot Road, Kilburn, at 10am.

The burial will be at Paddington Old Cemetery in Willesden Lane at 11.30am, and there will be a reception at Fortunegate Community Hall, Church Road, Willesden, from 1pm.
