Information on law changes

Every nursing and care home in the borough is being issued with information by Brent Council on legal changes which will strengthen the rights of residents in their care.

The information pack, which was sent out this week to 85 homes in Brent, explains the new deprivation of liberty safeguards which will come into effect on April 1, 2009.

People most likely to be affected by the new safeguards include older people with dementia or people with learning disabilities who lack the capacity to consent to where they receive their care or treatment.

School hosts concert fundraiser

A concert is being staged to raise money for schools, hospitals and employment in Niger.

Cousins-in-Christ will be appearing in a concert at Copland Community School, Cecil Avenue, Wembley, on November 29 with the aim to raise £10,000.

To date £1,659.21 has been raised.

The concert is being sponsored by RAFFA (Renewal Advancement Financial Freedom Autonomy) - an international development agency bringing relief to communities in Africa, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.

Niger is rated by the UN as one of the world's least developed nations.

Special event has operatic twist

An operatic company will be giving a performance for carers at a special event to commemorate Carers' Rights Day.

The hour-long performance by Connaught Opera will take at Brent Town Hall, Forty Avenue, Wembley, on December 5.

It will feature singers Maria Arakie and Glenn Wilson accompanied by pianist Carol Wells performing songs and light opera, and some glamourous costumes.

Connaught Opera will open the event for carers in the borough, organised by Brent Council in partnership with Brent Carers' Centre, which will also include a presentation on fire safety by Brent Fire Brigade Commander, Sean Bennett.

The event also includes a discussion of the National Carers' Strategy by NHS Brent and a presentation on Brent Council's Adult Social Care Transformation strategy.
