A Muslim community in Willesden Green has donated 500 free flower trees to passers by.

Tariq Dar, chairman of Pakistan Community Centre, gave out the bags outside the Central Mosque in Marley Walk last Friday, in a project

that involved the Friends of Gladstone Park and Cricklewood Library.

He said: “It is an Islamic duty to plant trees and we feel strongly about environment which is why we did it.

“We put in the ingredients for flowering trees, not fruit trees. We got pots and compost, seeds and instructions put them in a bag the day before then handed them to the public the next day for free.”

He said interest has grown from other local groups, adding: “There’s been a lot of enquiries from other mosques saying they want to do the same thing. I think this is the first time anyone’s done this in the Muslim community.”
