Young people in Brent are starring in their own Motown musical in Kingsbury to raise money for charity.
Motown Comes to London Town, is back for the second year running, with a show in Kingsbury High School in Princes Avenue on August 21.
The idea is the brainchild of Judy Harrison, a freelance drama therapist and founder of Five Loaves, the charity that raises the awareness of sexually abused children in Jamaica.
Sixteen children will belt out classic hits from the Supremes to the Four Tops, with a love story running through the show.
For a registration cost of £40 the young students have spent weeks perfecting their show with hours of professional drama workshops, a choreographer and a stylist.
Ms Harrison founded her charity following a trip to Jamaica where her parents are from and set up a clinical project helping young girls with a history of abuse see the hero within themselves.
She said: “Sometimes I think our children here don’t appreciate what they have. Even though this is a drama programme, it’s therapeutic as I share a little of what I’ve seen in Jamaica in some of the children, who are very resilient, and the children here are moved by that.”
Ms Harrison added: “Last year’s show sold out and we had to turn people away. We’re holding it at Kingsbury High School because it seats a capacity of 300. We don’t want to turn people away like we had to last year.”
