A MAYOR has been suspended from his post after being arrested and quizzed over benefit fraud.

Cllr Omar Faruque Ansari, Mayor of Camden, was suspended by the Lib Dem group following his arrest on suspicion of falsely claiming disability benefits and was marched out of the town hall by police on Monday.

He was released on bail until March and is under investigation by the Department for Work and Pensions.

A Camden Council spokesman said: "The Council does not comment on allegations relating to the personal lives of its members. No information would suggest that these allegations are connected with Councillor Ansari's work on the Council.

"We must all note that at this stage that these are merely allegations."

"The council has not as yet received the Mayor's resignation and therefore he remains in post as Mayor.
