Volunteers from an animal charity in Kensal Green have been awarded for their outstanding work by the Mayor of Brent.

Cllr Kana Naheerathan attended the annual volunteers award ceremony at Patidar House, London Road, Wembley, to celebrate the achievements of hundreds of helpers including five who help out at The Mayhew Animal Home in Trenmar Gardens.

Flick Thorley, Simon Jenkins and Doreen Campbell received certificates for their help with the rescue centre’s Therapaws programme, which provides much needed pet therapy to elderly people suffering from dementia and to patients in palliative care centres.

Volunteer Azmina Gulamhusein was recognised for her fundraising efforts and Deb O’Connor for her work in cattery.

Anna Claxton, voluntary resources manager at The Mayhew said: “We are lucky to have over 300 dedicated volunteers without whom we just couldn’t function to the standards that we do. It is very humbling and an honour to work alongside such selfless people.”

Deb O’Connor added: “I’m delighted to have even been considered and so grateful to those who nominated me. We get so much support from The Mayhew staff which is much appreciated.”

Entertainment was provided by the Mad Hatter’s theatre company, which performed Alice in Wonderland.
