The new Mayor of Brent has announced the charities he will be supporting for the coming year.

Councillor Kana Naheerathan, who also represents the Queensbury ward, is pledging his support to Prostate Cancer UK and Brent Mencap.

He said “I am pleased to support two charities – one at national level and one at local level - that are very close to my heart. Many men, who are at increased risk of prostate cancer, are often unaware of the danger and miss out being diagnosed at an early stage.”

He continued: “Brent Mencap is very active in the local community and provides a safe and supportive environment for local residents with learning disabilties to be active citizens, providing advice, support and opportunities to get healthier, challenge discrimination and play and learn”.

Cllr Naheerathan will support the charities through raising awareness and active fundraising.

Gabriella Bailey, head of community fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK and Ann O’Neill, executive director of Brent Mencap, have spoken of their delight of having the mayor on board.

Ms Bailey, said: We will work closely with him within the Brent community to provide dedicated services and information to men and their families affected by prostate cancer and fund research to help fight the disease.”

Ms O’Neill added: “There are 9000 people with learning disabilities in Brent. We aim to support them to get involved in community activities, challenge the unfairness they face and live healthier and more active lives.
