An abandoned cat brought into Mayhew nearly three years ago has finally found a permanent home with a former Eastenders star.

Four-year-old Magnum has gone from stray to superstar now he’s been adopted by actor Harry Reid, who played Ben Mitchell in the BBC soap.

Harry, who shares #harryandthemag adventures with his 94,000 Instagram fans, said: “I have been interested in rehoming ever since I first met Mayhew.

“I knew straight away that Magnum was the one for me – since bringing him home, he’s become my shadow and I love it!

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to adopt and rescue this beautiful little boy.

“Mum – here’s your grandson!”

The ginger and white tomcat was waiting for a new owner for two and half years at the charity in Trenmar Gardens after a member of the public brought him in.

The feline arrived in March 2016 suffering from an abscess on his front paw, cat flu, a urinary tract infection and a benign lump on his neck.

Blood tests revealed he had the incurable immune condition feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) an incurable condition that attacks the immune system.

Vets treated Magnum’s wounds, removed the lump, vaccinated, neutered and microchipped him, and gave him a thorough health and dental examination.

Then came the wait for adoption which turned from days into weeks, then months, then years as no match could be found.

Cats with FIV can lead a normal healthy life but are advised to stay indoors and only venture out very rarely.

Kayleigh Kilcommons, head of cattery at Mayhew, said: “As much as we all miss Magnum, we are delighted that he has found such a purr-fect home with Harry!”
