A shop that sold alcohol to a 13-year-old girl faces being banned from selling single cans of beer or lager and mini bottles of wine.
Sidney’s off-licence in Ealing Road, is facing new rules attached to its alcohol licence after it was caught out during a police sting launched after 60 residents signed a petition voicing concerns about the premises.
Locals demanded action claiming the shop attracted street drinkers who urinated in a nearby playground and caused anti-social behaviour.
In documents submitted to Brent Council’s licensing committee police are calling for the shop to be banned from selling single units of alcohol as a deterrent to street drinkers.
They are also asking that licensing manager Nadarajah Sivapalan complies with additional conditions including: up to date CCTV records; age-related purchase posters, challenge 25 notices and a log of any incidents.
The requests have been made after the shop sold two bottles of Smirnoff Ice to the girl on October 2015.
An officer issued a caution and a fixed penalty notice to a member of staff.
During a search of the shop the following day, police claim they found the off-licence “full” of customers repeatedly buying lottery scratch cards and drinking alcohol on the premises.
The officers claim a trail of cans and bottles littering the pavement from the shop led to nearby One Tree Hill recreation ground where they found a group of men drinking and urinating on the garden fences of properties backing onto the open space.
Pictures attached to the report show a ramshackle drinking area at the back of the shop and the litter trail.
A police statement submitted to the council states Mr Sivapalan was informed of the illegal sale at a Brent Council licensing meeting held on November 6 last year.
The statement adds: “Mr Sivapalan…expressed regret about what had happened but Police, from experience consider without the addition of conditions to a premises licence the negligence will continue.”
The case will be heard at a Brent Council licensing meeting on Thursday.
