A busy library has reopened after an extreme makeover.

St John's Wood library in Circus Road, Westminster, has had a £370,000 refurbishment, transforming the old-fashioned layout, replacing the dated library counters with high-tech supermarket style self-service machines.

During the four month revamp, the library's basement - previously used for storage - has been opened up giving customers around 80 percent more space.

The interior has been redesigned to create a bookshop atmosphere, with more space, new furniture, better lighting and improved stock displays.

Ten more computers have been installed which means one-to-one internet training sessions for residents of all ages.

The children's area has doubled in size and a new teenage area has been set up.

The speedy self-service machines free staff from counter desks and allow them to have a hands-on 'meet and greet' style with customers, helping with research and

book, DVD and music recommendations.

Cllr Audrey Lewis, Westminster City Council's Cabinet Member for Customers and Neighbourhoods, said: "St John's Wood Library has been transformed and will now provide an even better service to the local community.

New computer facilities mean that residents will also have the opportunity to learn new skills with one-to-one training sessions.

As well as creating a more welcoming atmosphere, the self-service machines in particular give our librarians the opportunity to get out from behind the counter and do what they are best at - helping people to get the most out of their local library."

A new staircase and lift have also been installed and the library is fully accessible to disabled visitors.
