Kilburn Tube mural vandalised – but only Camden half of it has been cleaned

The professional mural shows historic scenes of Kilburn, including performers from Kilburn’s 1930s mouse circus and characters from resident George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Co-funded by the Arts Council, it spans four walls over property belonging to London Underground, Camden and Brent.

Neighbour Agnes Peyser told the Times: “It’s had graffiti on it since September and Brent won’t clean it. The Camden side is maintained and the Kilburn side is not. It’s a complete shame that it’s not being looked after.

“It started when the mural lighting stopped working.”

The mural was painted in 2004 by renowned graffiti artists Snug, Dane, Bleach, Busk and Tizer, with the assistance of a young local apprentice.

A Brent Council spokesman said:

“This kind of vandalism would ordinarily be removed by jet-washing, but we’ve been advised by Veolia that using this method would potentially damage the mural, which was a community project costing several thousand pounds.

“We are looking at alternative ways of removing the graffiti which won’t damage the mural.”
