Kilburn’s most outspoken councillor has resigned from the Labour group.

Cllr John Duffy made the announcement at a full council meeting in Brent Civic Centre last night.

Kilburn’s representative stood down over the lack of support from the Labour group over Paddington Cemetery asbestos concerns.

He said: “I’ve resigned from the Labour group. I can’t take the Labour whip any more.

“The Labour leadership has let down the people of Kilburn many times.”

As reported by the Brent and Kilburn Times in October last year, asbestos was found in a mound planned for new burial plots.

He is calling for an independent investigation into safety aspects for nearby residents and school children.

Cllr Duffy has previously accused the council of ostracising him for exposing a flaw he says could have seen the council give away up to £2million to a private contractor.

He was not selected by Labour to stand for the May 2018 elections and has three months left as councillor.
