Michael Amadi is well on his way to making his own dream come true and recording music for disadvantaged children.

The 25-year-old, who lives in Station Terrace, Kensal Rise, is taking his pop ballad Rise Again to Vancouver from January 27 to February 2 for a set of live performances with proceeds going to charity.

Currently a final year songwriting student at The Institute Of Contemporary Music Performance in Dyne Road, Kilburn, he is collaborating with the non-profit organisation HUM – Healing Using Music.

He said: “Rise Again is a song I wrote for people going through a hard time, it offers words of comfort, the kind of music I like to write. I write with that purpose, it’s the reason behind all my songs. I like helping people.”

Eventually he would like to write songs for children with traumatic brain injuries and is currently doing his dissertation on music therapy.

He added: “My first single, Things That You Are, was dedicated to children from the United Cerebral Palsy Association in America.”

The pianist, singer and songwriter, was a finalist in the 2015 Paris ATLA University Songwriting Competition. He has also performed for the French charity Les Cammioneurs de Coeur.

He contacted HUM and created an itinerary of musical activities including songwriter circles, acoustic sets and a private concert on January 29 at the Ronald McDonald House.

He said: “I haven’t gone through hard times in that sense. My brother was born when I was 13 and those feelings of seeing a person growing up, the challenges they might face, made me want to write for children.”

He moved to Cricklewood from his native Florence three years ago, moving to Kensal Rise last year.

“I especially love Kensal Rise because there’s Queen’s Park, a really beautiful park, just five minutes away”, he added.

Winnie Ma, co-founder of HUM, said: “When Michael reached out to us from halfway across the world, we were inspired by his diverse musical background, spirit for volunteerism and passion for lifting up others through music.”

Rise Again is released online on January 25 and CDs will be for sale with a bonus track on humcanada.com
