Therapists from Kensal Green’s Mayhew Animal Home got some media attention this week as they cheered people up as part of ‘Blue Monday’.
TheraPaws dogs, part of the charity’s animal therapy visiting programme cheered up staff at Bauer Radio, home of Kiss Fm and Kerrang!, and Hearst, a magazine publishing company with titles including Elle and Cosmopolitan.
The third Monday in January, known as “Blue Monday”, is said to be the most depressing day of the year, but the TheraPaw dogs decided to brighten up the day and spread some joy.
All eyes were on the TheraPaws dogs when they arrived at Bauer Towers in Shaftesbury Avenue who were quickly awarded with cuddles and big smiles from admirers from all different floors and radio stations.
A quick walk to Soho and they delighted staff in the Hearst building.
Volunteers and their dogs normally spread happiness when they go on regular visits to care homes, day centres, hospices and hospitals.
The therapy visiting programme recognises the mutual benefits of animals engaging with people, particularly older people with dementia, helping to improve the relationships between humans and dogs.

They enhance people’s lives by helping to reduce social isolation, stress and unlocking memories and emotions. The initiative also raises awareness of the positive effects dogs can have, including promoting respect and compassion towards animals.
Luke Berman, TheraPaws project manager, said: “It was a terrific day. As we walked into the offices, people immediately stopped talking and working – all they wanted to do was come over and speak to our volunteers and their dogs. It’s clear to see that they bring a lot of joy and wellbeing to people.”
