Patients who die on waiting lists before they can get organ transplants are the subject of a Europe-wide initiative.

Transplant patients and doctors at the renal unit in Hammersmith Hospital, Du Cane Road, Hammersmith, spoke with Robert Evans MEP on September 19 about a report he presented to the European Parliament.

Illegal organ trafficking, the introduction of a European Donor Card and new technology in organ transplants were discussed at the hospital, which is the largest facility in Europe for nephrology, dialysis and transplantation.

Mr Evans, who has special responsibilities in Brent and Hammersmith & Fulham, alongside other boroughs, said: "Organ shortage is the one thing that we cannot improve by improving our healthcare. We must rely on the goodwill of others.

"But with developments in technology and medical research, the distress of waiting for a compatible organ could be a thing of the past."
