The Brent Indian Association celebrated Indian Independence Day with a flag hoisting ceremony

India’s Independence Day was celebrated in Wembley with a flag hoisting ceremony.

The Brent Indian Association, based in Ealing Road, gathered to mark the 69th anniversary of the country’s independence.

Cllr Parvez Ahmed, deputy mayor of Brent, Cllr Navin Shah, member of the London Assembly for Brent and Harrow and Cllr Helen Carr, leader of the Brent Liberal Democrats were among those who attended the ceremony.

The “triranga “ (three Colour) flag was raised and the National Anthems of India and Britain were observed by all present.

Tributes were paid to the late Abdul Kalam, the former Indian president who died in July. Tributes were also paid to freedom fighters in India including Mahatama Ghandhi and the Shree Jawahar Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister.

Cllr Helen Carr said: “This is one of the first events I ever went to this time last year. I’m very pleased I maintained a connection with the Brent Indian Association, they are extremely nice people and very well established. I’ve got personal connections with India like a lot of people so it was lovely to attend.”
