The eagerly awaited Moberly Sports Centre in Chamberlayne Road, Queen’s Park, will open to the public on Saturday.

The new sports centre will be officially opened by super-middleweight boxing champion James DeGale, light welterweight champion and local boxing superstar Ashley Theophane and double gold Olympic gymnast Max Whitlock.

Built as part of a £28million investment in sports facilities across Westminster, the centre will include the first newly built public swimming pool in the City in almost 40 years, as well as a range of state-of-art-facilities such as a 13m teaching pool, an eight-court sports hall, a dance studios and a gym.

The plans, drawn up in 2013, proved divisive. Five and a half thousand people signed a petition opposing the closure of the pool at Jubilee Sports Centre in Caird Street, part of the deal.

Westminster’s cabinet member for economic development, education and community Cllr David Harvey said: “Moberly will serve the whole community. The range of facilities for people of all ages will enable it to do just that.”
