Health chiefs in Brent are urging people to avoid going to hospital if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms in order to protect other patients.

The London North West University Healthcare (LNWUH) NHS Trust has seen 173 members of the public who have tested positive for flu since December, with 94 patients at Northwick Park Hospital, and 79 at Ealing Hospital.

As a result of this patients who have a booked appointment at these hospitals are being asked to reschedule it if they experience two or more of ten flu symptoms.

Those planning to visit the hospital to see friends or relatives are also asked to wait until they are symptom-free before coming in, except in an emergency, to help contain the virus.

Dr Bill Lynn, infectious diseases consultant, said: “Influenza can be dangerous for patients who already require medical treatment. None of us would want our loved ones to be put at risk by the virus, and that’s why we’re asking for the public’s support in stopping flu from spreading wherever possible.

“Please help us protect our patients by staying away from hospital if you have two or more flu symptoms.”

People are told to look out for a high fever of 38 degrees centigrade or more, shortness of breath or cough, headache, runny nose, sore throat, and tiredness. People may also experience aching limbs, a lack of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea and /or stomach cramps.

The trust said that the UK has seen a surge in flu infections this year with more than 3,500 people admitted to hospital across the country.

More than 4.5 million people are thought to have flu-like symptoms.

Dr Lynn added: “In most cases, hospital isn’t the best place to care for someone with flu – it’s usually best to rest at home, stay warm, and drink plenty of water so that you keep hydrated.

“If you are concerned about being unwell, you should call the 111 helpline for advice or your GP surgery.”
