The unit includes three wards named Crick, Darwin and Elgar and promises to provide an enhanced experience for patients in addition to a state-of-the-art working environment for staff.

The Crick ward is an assessment unit while Darwin caters for short stay patients.

Both wards aim to quicken the time it takes to move patients from A&E admission to a ward bed before they are discharged.

The Elgar ward replaces ran infectious diseases unit that was over 40 years old and consists of 15 single rooms with en-suite facilities and individual temperature control.

The rooms have their own negative pressure units to stop air flowing from the room and prevent cross infection between patients.

Jacqueline Docherty DBE, chief executive of London North West Healthcare NHS Trust which runs the hospital in Watford Road, Sudbury, said: “The opening of these wards represents a major investment the future of Northwick Park and will help improve the care and experience of patients in hospital.
