England’s first purpose built operating theatre for innovative bowel surgery has been opened in a hospital in Brent.

The £500,000 theatre in St Mark’s Hospital, Watford Road, is the first to combine 3D laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery with simultaneous flexible endoscopy (a long, thin, flexible tube that has a light source and a video camera at one end).

It also boasts fully integrates 2D and 3D imaging systems and sterile touch screens to control the equipment.

Professor Robin Kennedy, consultant surgeon at London North West Healthcare NHS Trust, which manages the hospital, said: “It means bowel operations will be smaller, safer and faster and it will reduce patients’ recovery time.

“This will be the way surgery will be performed in the future.”
