A care bundle used by health chiefs has saved 49 lives so far
A hospital trust has been recognised for its work to prevent patients dying from pneumonia.
The North West London Hospitals Trust (NWLHT) reached the finals of the Health Service Journal Awards in the acute and primary care innovation category, which were judged last night (Tuesday).
The trust did not win but the accolade recognised its efforts to stop patients succumbing to community-acquired pneumonia.
This form of pneumonia is caused by a chest infection which patients have a good chance of surviving if they are treated quickly.
A care bundle used by the trust is thought to have saved 49 lives so far.
It has also reduced the amount of time patients stay in hospital which equates to a 200,000 saving.
David McVittie, NWLH’s chief executive, said: “I am delighted that the care bundles are working so well and that our hard work has been recognised by the HSJ as a relatively simple but innovative way of reducing avoidable deaths.”
