Residents are fighting controversial proposals for Willesen Junction

The fight to stop a giant incinerator being dumped on the doorsteps of Harlesden residents has intensified with more than 1,000 signatures collected calling for an end to the plans.

A petition has been organised by the Harlesden Environmental Action Residents Team (HEART) and has been signed by 1,321 people.

The controversial planning application for a four chimney “energy recovery centre” at Willesden Junction is due to be voted on shortly, with this Thursday marked as the earliest possible date.

However, discussions between the applicants, Clean Power Properties and the governments high speed rail line Hs2, who also want to use the site in Channel Gate Road, could spell more delays.

Campaigners opposed to the plans have been vociferous in their opposition since they announced last year expressing fears of air pollution and traffic.

The fight has brought together several residents groups, including Rucklidge Avenue Residents Association, Odessa and Palermo Neighbourhood Watch group and the Island Triangle Residents Association, who have all been collecting signatures against the plans.

Rev Robert Wilson, chair of HEART said: “We are amazed that Ealing Council would allow an Incinerator plant to be built here. There could be serious long term effects on the environment.”

Brent Council has also condemned the plans and the petition has been signed by Cllr Claudia Hector, who represents the Kensal Green ward, leader of the council Cllr Muhammed Butt and Cllr Michael Adeyeye Mayor of Brent.

The final decision will be made by Ealing Council due to the proposed location

The petition was handed to Ealing Council last Friday.

Rev Wilson added: “There is a intense opposition to the plans and we have submitted a Petition signed by 1321 local residents. We hope that Ealing Council will take into consideration the public’s views on this important issue.”

Ealing Council say their planning team are making enquires about the methods that would be put in place to maintain and monitor appropriate air quality at and around the site.
