Volunteers took time out of their weekend to spruce up a stretch of canal in Harlesden.

They came from across the borough to join waterway charity Thames21 for a special clean-up event.

Eight donned gloves and overalls to clear rubbish and fill bin bags from the Grand Union Canal at Twford Abbey Road.

Vicky D’souza, one of the organisers from Thames 21 said: “In total 20 bin bags of rubbish were removed from the towpath and canal and the volunteers worked really hard.”

As well as the overall clean-up a bicycle and a shopping trolley were also pulled from the water during the event on August 18.

Thames21 works with communities across the capital to improve the waterways for both people and wildlife.

n Further clean-up events are planned for later in the year and for more details about the charity go to www.thames21.org.uk.
