A planning application has been lodged to change the use of a former popular music venue so it can be demolished for a block of flats and a medical centre.

The Good Ship, in Kilburn High Road, which helped launch the careers of Adele and rock band The xx, was Kilburn’s last remaining music venue before closing in October.

Plans set out by KHR Properties include the demolition of the building and building of a five-storey block comprising nine self-contained flats.

The developer has also applied for a “change of use” for the ground floor and basement to “medical use”.

Documents lodged at the town hall state: “It is proposed that this would be for a medical or health services – for example, a dentist, opticians, physiotherapist, chiropractor etc.”

Now supporters of the venue have taken to social media calling for Brent Council planners to reject the bid.

Agnes Peyser, an activist living in Iverson Road, said: “The Good Ship was the last music/comedy venue in Kilburn, the once Music Mile.

“Last week the Kingdom pub closed. Last year we lost the Kilburn Ironworks.

“We need to protect our pubs. They provide meeting spaces for locals and attract outside visitors to Kilburn.”

She added: “Medical facilities are not needed on the High Road. In the past three months there have now been three applications to turn shops and restaurants to D1 medical use. The site next to the Kiln Theatre, the Ludlow and Thompson office next to Sainsbury’s local and now the Good Ship. A prominent retail facility at the corner of Quex Road is now a dental surgery. Within the top end of Kilburn High Road there are numerous opticians, dentists and other medical use facilities.

“I would have hoped [MP Moran] would show more concern about our neighbourhood.”

Pub campaigners also tweeted questions relating to the DMP21 – Brent’s pub protection policy – and whether this will be honoured.

Brent’s planning boss Shama Tatler responded: “The pub protection policy, DMP21 on Public Houses, will be applied in the deliberations.

“Residents can comment on the application online through the council’s planning portal.”

A spokeswoman for KHR said: “The Good Ship closed down in October 2017 due to some very difficult trading periods which could not be sustained any longer.

“Mr Cooke, the previous owner of The Good Ship, was trying for some time to sell his interest in the business onto a new owner so that The Good Ship could remain open but despite his efforts there was nobody interested in purchasing his lease.

“When KHR purchased the property, we consulted with agents in the area and they advised there was a high demand for a D1 use.”

The Times previously said the application was submitted by MP Moran & Sons.

The two companies are in the same building in Kilburn High Road and share a director but MP Moran & Sons has “nothing to do with it”, said a spokesman.
