Rival gangs have been using the social networking site twitter to warn of upcoming clashes at Notting Hill Carnival this weekend.

One twitter user known as Enemy Artist today wrote: “I heard from a close reliable source Mozart and South Kilburn mandem are gonna start war wid each other at carnival...”

The police have previously warned about simmering tensions between youths living on the Mozart estate in Westminster, and their rivals in South Kilburn, and said they are working with the community to tackle violent crime on the estates.

Brent Superintendent Alisdair Ferguson said: “We are aware of the social networking interactions and are working closely with the community to corroborate any threats made.

“In the last few moths we have raised our policing presence in the two estates and we are working closely with Westminster and the local authorities to prevent any escalation of violence.

“In the lead up to the carnival we have carried out a number of search warrants to take drugs off the streets, disrupt youth gangs and reduce criminal and anti social activity in the area.”
