Midfielder netted winner for Rs in friendly win at Wimbledon on Saturday

Midfielder Luke Freeman has spoken of his desire to get among the goals for Queens Park Rangers in the Championship next season.

Since joining from Bristol City in January 2017, the 26-year-old has managed just seven goals in 64 appearances in all competitions for the west Londoners.

However, the former Arsenal trainee netted the only goal in a 1-0 friendly win for the Rs at Wimbledon on Saturday.

Despite not netting as many goals as he would have liked, Freeman has certainly contributed plenty of assists during his time with QPR.

But with the start of the new season fast approaching, the ex-Stevenage midfielder is desperate to add more goals to his game.

“I’ve spoken to the gaffer (Steve McClaren) about it and I’m desperate to get more goals this season,” Freeman told the club website.

“I don’t seem to have as much a problem with getting assists which I want to maintain, but I want to score more goals as well.”

Against Wimbledon, QPR were given a tough workout by the League One club in sweltering conditions.

The Loftus Road outfit were pushed hard by the Dons, with Freeman’s winner coming in the final minute of the match.

The midfielder acknowledges the warm weather made it difficult, but knows the squad will benefit from playing in such draining conditions in the long run.

“It was very tough. For a lot of the boys, it was their first 90 minutes in hot, sticky conditions,” he added.

“We’ve got it under our belts now and we’ll benefit from it, but getting through it was a lot tougher than normal.”

The win over Wimbledon saw QPR continue their countdown to the start of the new league season, which begins at Preston North End’s Deepdale on August 4.

And with the beginning of the new term rapidly approaching, Freeman is excited about what lies ahead for McClaren’s men over the coming months of the upcoming campaign.

“You can’t wait for the start of the new season,” he said.

“You enjoy your summer, then once you get back into pre-season and you get the hard work out of the way, you see the light at the end of the tunnel which is the first game of the season.”
