A free film documenting a group of striking night workers 45 years ago is being shown in Wembley followed by a question and answer with its producer.
The Night Cleaners, is playing at Preston Community Library in Preston Road on Saturday, with an introduction from its producer Humphry Trevelyan.
The film. set during the cleaners’ strike at the Ministry of Defence, was made by members of the Berwick Street Collective during 1970-1972.
It documents the campaign to unionise the women who cleaned office blocks at night and who were being victimised and underpaid by their employers.
The women striking were encouraged by ex cleaner May Hobbs, and the Women’s Liberation Movement, to unionise and fight for better pay and working conditions.
The documentary shows their isolation as they set to work vacuuming, polishing and wiping desks in large City towers.
The film stretches beyond the workplace into the lives and communities of the women who care for their families and look after their homes.
The film asks how different working conditions are today.
Doors open 7:15pm for a 7.30pm start. Donations are welcome.
