One of Kilburn’s most famous strongmen was remembered at a special ceremony in Ireland on Sunday.

Michael ‘Butty’ Sugrue, was very well known on the London scene in the 1960’s as owner of the Admiral Nelson, in Carlton Vale, before his death in 1977, aged 53.

There is a legend that he once pulled a London Bus up Kilburn High Road with one hand while pushing a baby in a pram with the other.

He is also famed in Ireland as the man who brought Muhammad Ali to Dublin in 1972 to fight Al ‘Blue’ Lewis in Croke Park.

The event on Sunday at the farm in Gortnascarry, Killorglin raised money for cancer awareness by charity Threshing Cancer.

The day included a special addition as Killorglin Archive Society celebrated the life of one of Gortnascarry’s and Kerry’s most famous sons.
