RESIDENTS could be fined up to 1,000 if they fail to return voter registration forms by a November deadline.

Brent Council says only 36 per cent of people have responded since the forms, that allow people to vote in national and local elections, were sent out in August.

Sending out reminders and employing canvassers to knock on doors could land the council with a 200,000 bill, the council said.

Cllr Lesley Jones, lead member for human resources and diversity and local democracy and consultation, said: “With the current pressures on the council to make savings, this is money that could be much better spent on delivering services to our residents.”

Residents can register by contacting the Brent Council on 020 8937 1372 or email electoral.services@brent.gov.uk
