More than 400 people were evacuated from the Tricycle Theatre yesterday evening after a fire broke out at medical centre above it.
Visitors to the cinema were forced to leave the building in Kilburn High Road after fire crews arrived at around 9.40pm.
The evening’s play had ended so the theatre was closed.
Station Manager Sam Kazmanli, who was at the scene, said: “Around 400 people were evacuated from the theatre and cinema on the upper floors of the building as a precaution but our crews worked very quickly to stop this fire from spreading and to contain it to a kitchen on the first floor.”
A part of Kilburn High Road was closed off for around 90 minutes to allow fire crews to tackle the blaze.
It was under control by 11.10pm.
A spokeswoman for the Tricycle told the Times the theatre had not been damaged by the fire so they will be no disruption to scheduled performances.
She added that anyone who was evacuated will be given a replacement cinema ticket
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
