People who have gone beyond the call of duty to help make Harlesden a better place were recognised for their contributions at an award ceremony yesterday.

The John Dryden Awards 2013, hosted by Harlesden Town Team (HTT) at the Salvation Army Hall in Manor Park Road, saw 21 individuals, businesses and organisations on the receiving end of a certificate of achievement.

This year’s awards were named after John Dryden, a senior engineer at Brent Council, who is a valued supporter of HTT.

Michael Kearney, 65, treasurer of Harlesden Environmental Action Residents Team (HEART) was delighted with his certificate.

Mr Kearney, who attends HTT meetings on behalf of HEART members, said: “I was delighted and surprised.

“It’s nice to get something that shows you are thought about and valued.

“I am pleased to be involved with it (HTT) and I can pass on information to people who can’t go to the meetings.”

Jonathan James, London Overground customer manager, received a certificate after working with HTT on the £700,000 transformation of the approach road from Harlesden town centre to Willesden Junction train station.

It’s good to work with enthusiastic people,” said Mr James who credited HTT with helping the project to run smoothly.

“It helped get the momentum going.”

The certificates were presented by Brent and Kilburn Times news editor Lorraine King.

“I was very happy to be asked to present the awards,” said Miss King.

“It’s so good to see what great support Harlesden Town Team receive from so many businesses and organisations in the area who care about Harlesden.”

HTT chairman Leroy Simpson said: “All the people we gave awards to have done something they didn’t have to do – they have done it for the benefit of the Town Team.

“Everybody has gone out of their way to help us and help Harlesden residents.”
