Primary schools in Brent beat national results but struggle in London

Primary pupils attaining level 4 at Key Stage 2 for the core subjects is 83 per cent in compared with the national average of 80pc and 84pc across all London boroughs and the City of London.

They have fared better than last year rising three percentage points from 80pc.

The results are the expected attainment of 11-year-olds before they head to secondary school.

Brent pupils’ progress moving from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 was also higher than the national average but below the London average.

Ninety-two per cent achieved the level of progress in reading, 95pc in writing and 91pc in maths while the national average was 91pc, 94pc and 90 pc respectively.

Cllr Ruth Moher, Brent Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “These are very good results by Brent’s family of schools and are testament to the hard work of pupils and teachers as well of the dedicated partnership work by Brent Council and the schools to help improve the quality of education in the borough and performance of schools.

“We are absolutely committed to providing every young person in Brent with a high-quality education and the best start in life possible regardless of their background. While it is good that these results show we are performing well, we still have much more work to do and will continue to do everything we can to drive up standards even further.”

Last year Brent Council published its ‘Ambitious for All’ action plan which set out how it will work in partnership with the borough’s schools to raise standards.

It set the target to have every school judged by Ofsted as good or outstanding by 2017.
