Pre-schools in Willesden and Neasden are facing the axe
Furious parents have started a petition against plans by Brent Council to close down to popular nurseries.
Last week, the Brent and Kilburn Times revealed that Treetops in Doyle Gardens, Willesden and Harmony in Bridge Road, Neasden, were facing the axe.
However, the decision has been met with anger from parents who fear their children may not get places at other pre-schools in the borough. Is urging residents to sign the petition.
She said: “First the council took our libraries, now they’re attacking our ability to earn and provide for our children. “If you care about maintaining services in your borough, please sign the petition and support our case.”
Mrs Sones, who lives on Furness Road, Harlesden, also expressed concern for working mothers in the borough.
She said: “In particular, working mums are likely to be negatively affected by the closure as without childcare, they can’t continue to work.”
The plans come as part of a cost cutting drive in which the council are making 100million savings in a four-year period.
A council consultation is already underway, however Mrs Sones fears their opinions will be ignored.
She said: “The consultation is not a consultation about whether the council will continue to run the nursery; it is about whether someone else will run it for them.”
A council spokesman said a decision on the nurseries would be made in the new year.
He added: “There are a lot of alternative childcare provisions locally so families should not face any problem finding a suitable place for their child.
“If the proposal to close the nurseries is agreed, we will help them to make alternative arrangements.”
