“It was the best week of my life.”

Those were the words of a 16 year-old Brent student on his return from an intensive and inspirational course held at Eton College last week.

Aaron Bharadava, who attends Claremont High School in Claremont Avenue, Kenton, was one of 48 year 11 students chosen from schools across the borough to take part in the 20th annual Brent-Eton Summer Scheme.

Taught by teachers at the iconic Windsor school, the week long course includes training, workshops, creative and sporting activities together with lectures and public speaking exercises.

Aaron said the experience improved his public speaking, teamwork and leadership skills.

He added: “My highlight was the swimming and the snorkelling and I learnt how to do salsa and the week ended with a prom - it was really good.”

Abdi-Nasir Ahmed, 16, who attends Wembley High Technology College in East Lane, Wembley, also praised the course.

“It was really enjoyable,” he said.

“There was never a point where we had nothing to do.

“It was never just the same routine.”

Abdi-Nasir said he enjoyed the lectures and debates the most, especially the ones focussing on psychology.

The course, exclusive to Brent Youth Service, is designed to stretch students, raise their ambitions and “enhance their capabilities for excellence”.

Cllr Zaffar Van Kalwala, who represents Stonebridge ward and is co-chair of Brent Youth Parliament, said: “The Brent-Eton scheme is an inspiration for our young people.

“They are a huge asset to our community and I’m very proud of the contributions they make to our borough.

“It’s vital that we all work to support and champion the future potential of our young people.”

The students returned to Brent on Saturday, following a graduation ceremony as a finale to their week at Eton.

Each year, alumni return to Eton as volunteers to help out on the scheme.
