Detectives in witness appeal after elderly pedestrian killed in busy street

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a fatal collision in Kilburn which claimed the life of an elderly woman.

The pedestrian, who is in her 70s, was in a collision with a lorry in Kilburn High Road at the junction of Belsize Road, last Wednesday (18), at 9.55am.

She died at the scene.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and has been bailed to return to a North West London police station in November pending further enquiries.

Investigating officers are unable to release the woman’s name until she has been formally identified and all her next of kin have been informed.

Andy Andrea, who works in Monte, men’s hairdressers opposite where the collusion happened, rushed across the road to help.

He told the Times: “I heard a loud bang and turned round and just saw an old lady lying there, everyone was screaming, I rushed to help but it I could tell it was too late.

“A woman who was driving down the High Road at the same time got out and checked her pulse before putting a blanket over her, I don’t think she had a chance really, it’s very sad.”

Sadheer Khan, who works in Same Day Buy and Repair also on the High Road described the incident as ‘very upsetting’.

He said: “I looked outside, there were lots of vehicles and people but I could see shoes and a walking stick on the floor, it was horrible.”

Witnesses are asked to call the Road Death Investigation Unit based at Northolt Traffic Garage on 020 8842 1817.
