A Wembley man has been jailed for five years for causing death by driving dangerously after an accident which killed one of his passengers and seriously injured another.
Mohammed Nabil, 19, of Wyld Way, who was driving his brother’s car without permission while under the influence of alcohol, lost control on a wet road colliding with a number of parked cars.
Emergency services were called at around 3am on May 31 2015 where they found one of Nabil’s back seat passengers, 27-year-old Zohaib Anwar, dead at the scene.
A second rear passenger - a 45-year-old man - was taken to hospital and has been left with life changing injuries.
Two other passengers suffered minor injuries.
Nabil was sentenced for numerous offences having pleaded guilty at Harrow Crown Court on May 4.
The court heard Nabil had been drinking throughout the evening.
He had attended a party in Acton, a pub in Hayes and a restaurant in Southall before visiting a friend in Kingsbury, an investigation by detectives from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command discovered.
He then drove his four friends to a nightclub in Wembley shortly after midnight.
After leaving the club, he reversed into a traffic island but did not check the Ford Focus for damage before heading towards Kingsbury.
About three miles into his journey, CCTV cameras captured him driving at 47mph in a 30mph zone.
As Nabil negotiated a double bend of parked cars and a traffic island, a back tyre failed and he lost control.
Nabil was arrested, and was charged with the offences on December 20 2015.
He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, disqualified from driving for seven-and-a-half years and ordered to pay a £120 victim surcharge for causing death by dangerous driving.
He received a further four year’s imprisonment, to run concurrently, for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and for aggravated vehicle taking;
A further one year’s jail time for causing death while uninsured is also to run concurrently,
Det Sgt Chris Osborne, from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, based at Alperton Traffic Garage, said: “This was a tragic case for all concerned. Nabil made a number of very poor decisions that night.
“First, he took his brother’s car without consent knowing full well he had no insurance. He then spent the evening drinking before colliding with a traffic island.
“Having damaged the wheel of the car, Nabil carried on driving in a dangerous manner - at speed - in wet conditions. It was almost inevitable that a collision would occur.
“Sadly this led to the death of Zohaib Anwar and left another man suffering life changing injuries.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Anwar, and we wish his friend well in his ongoing recovery.”
