Wembley man jailed for cocaine and heroin smuggling plot

Omar Assaf, 35, of Hillview Close, was a member of a gang that smuggled class A drugs in to the country from Europe.

Harrow Crown Court heard when police tried to stop Assaf as he drove around with the class A drugs in his car he refused to stop and ended up knocking down a pedestrian and ploughing into another car.

He was arrested after he fled the scene on foot with accomplice Aydin Aziz, 45, from Enfield.

The pair and 45-year-old Debbie Reid, from St Albans were snared after detectives launched an intelligence-led undercover operation into their activities.

Officers witnessed Reid, who acted as the importer, travelling to and from France via the channel tunnel three times between March 10 and April 6 this year.

On her journey back to St Albans she would meet with Assaf and on the last occasion she met with both men.

Assaf and Aziz had travelled to her house where she was seen handing over an orange carrier bag she had removed from her car.

Both men drove off and when police tried to pull Assaf over he refused to stop ending in the crash.

The orange bag contained 2kg of cocaine and 2kg of heroin.

Yesterday Assaf and Aziz were jailed for seven years and Reid was sentenced to six years and eight months.

All three had earlier pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply Class A drugs

DC Andrew Walker of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “This police operation has successfully dismantled a network of sophisticated criminals, who, despite making use of encrypted mobile devices, did not manage to evade capture.”
